Free Comics Day will offer more than expected at Tumwater Library

Tumwater Timberland Library will offer more than just free comics on Free Comics Day Saturday, May 3. They have organized a celebration that includes games, hands-on activities, a chance to create an original comic strip with artist Frank Frazee, and a costume contest.

The event will kick off at 10 a.m., and go until 3 p.m., at the library, located at 415 Tumwater Blvd. SW.

Comics available will be for ages four to adult, and will include titles such as "Avatar" and "Archie."

Participants can craft personalized insignia necklaces representing superheroes such as Batman, Superman, Spiderman, X-men, Flash, Wonder Woman, Thor, Captain America, Green Lanter, and others. All supplies will be furnished.

Individuals or families can sign up to participate in a "cosplay" (short for costume-play). One prize will be awarded for the best set of matching costumes, and one for best individual costume. Prizes will be awarded.

Schedule of events:

11 a.m.-3 p.m.: Comic books given away while supplies last. Two per person will be allowed; Card and board game free play; and insignia necklace crafting, one per person.

11 a.m.-2 p.m.: Rock Band free play.

1 p.m.: Cosplay contest sign up (sign up is required).

1:45 p.m.: Cosplay winners announced.

2-3 p.m.: Draw your own comic strip with Frank Frazee. Class is limited to 30 people. Call the library, at 36-943-7790, to register for the class.
