Olympia High team wins state math meet

Several South Sound teams, students qualify for national math tourney

A team from Olympia High School won the 2014 Washington State Math Meet, and several other South Sound high school teams and students have qualified for the national Mathleague.org Championship.

The Evergreen State College in Olympia hosted the state championship round of the tournament on April 12. The national championship will be held May 16 in Kansas City, Mo.

“The overwhelming success of the students in this round of the math meet is a wonderful thing,” said organizer Brian Walter, a faculty member at Evergreen. “We’re delighted some local students will go ahead and compete in Kansas City at the highest level.”

Here are the results:

Overall team: first place, Olympia; second place, Henry Foss; third place, North Thurston.

Freshman/sophomore team: first place, Olympia; second place, Henry Foss; third place, North Thurston.

Overall individual: first place, Ernest Gu of Olympia; second place, Min Choi of Olympia; third place, Henry Hua of Henry Foss.

12th grade individual: first place, Abby Santos of River Ridge; second place, Liam Lloyd of Olympia; third place, Hiep Can of Henry Foss.

11th grade: first place, Ernest Gu of Olympia; second place, Min Choi of Olympia; third place, Dan Tran of North Thurston.

10th grade: first place, Henry Hua of Henry Foss; second place, Daniel Grimm of North Thurston; third place, Theodore Jeremy Ong of Olympia.

9th grade: first place, Warren Gu of Olympia; second place, Breanna Smith of River Ridge; third place, Morgan Wohosky of River Ridge.
