Proposals to expand export facilities in Grays Harbor to ship toxic North American petrochemicals to Asia are absolutely irresponsible. These new facilities would receive “crude by rail” including light crude oil, highly flammable Bakken shale crude and very dangerous diluted bitumen from Alberta’s tar sands fields.
Clearly, the rail infrastructure in our region was never intended for this hazardous material — no jurisdictions along the route are capable of effectively responding to spills, fires and explosions on water or land of this toxic material.
Crude by rail destined for export markets via Washington state must be banned. Its risks to public heal and safety and to ecosystem security far outweigh purported economic gain.
