In regards to the burned-out Griswold’s Office Supply building: Let’s not forget that for a good part of that building’s life it was a movie theater: the Avalon Theatre. Rolla Duncan owned and operated the Avalon Theatre when it opened on April 26, 1928. It showed silent movies and converted to sound movies in 1930. In 1936, the theater was sold to W.B. “Mac” MacDonald. He closed it on June 1, 1952, in order to concentrate on running his Olympic Theater just two blocks away.
The State Theater was very popular showing discount movies until Act 3 Theaters suddenly closed the theater after a tiff with the city. How about rebuilding the Avalon Theater and showing movies again? I’m sure other people would also like to see a movie theater downtown again on the main drag.
