I was fortunate to grow up in a lovely area of Thurston County in the 1960s where the gopher was considered a pest. Our large expanse of lawn was dominated by the creatures and my dad, Lloyd, was on constant alert concerning any new development in the field. He had tried traps of all kinds and today, all of his extermination means would be considered very politically incorrect.
But, being a man of World War II, an American Legion member and a strong constitutional Republican, he felt it was his duty to protect his homeland. So it came as no surprise, when I looked out my bedroom window one morning, to see him armed with his rifle aiming it into a gopher mound. Unfortunately, or fortunately, this came to no avail. The question is now: What would Lloyd do?
