A right-handed pitcher, Dunnington completed his collegiate career at Colorado Mesa (NCAA Division II), where he posted a 5.60 ERA over 12 appearances with 24 strikeouts in 14 1/3 innings pitched.

Dunnington helped the Mavericks to the NCAA Division II national title game, where they fell 3-2 in 12 innings to Southern Indiana on May 31.

Dunnington's older brother, Jacob, is a pitcher in the San Francisco Giants organization. Jacob Dunnington signed a free-agent deal out of high school in 2009.
