River Ridge High School is hosting the inaugural Nick Woods Memorial basketball tournament all day Saturday (June 14) inside the school's gymnasium. The event begins at 10 a.m. with the championship game of the 8-team field is set for 5:30 p.m.

The free event is scheduled to feature notable River Ridge alumni as well as other Lacey area athletes, including Mike Sellers, Chris Spivey, Lorenzo Jones, Scott Henderson and Mark Tischnor, said Gary Larson, River Ridge's athletic director.

In January 1995, Nick Woods, then a 6-foot-1 sophomore guard at River Ridge, died following complications after a hernia operation. He was averaging a Narrows League-leading 19.5 points, four rebounds and five assists per game. According to Olympian archives, his final game was Jan. 20, 1995, scoring 19 points in a 79-72 win over Foss.

"The idea behind the tournament is to raise awareness of community and get involved in schools and youth programs," Larson said.
