United States U-21 national team forward Jordan Morris, who is from Mercer Island, has joined the Pierce County-based Sounders U-23 Premier Development League team.

Morris was scheduled to be on the U-23 active roster for Friday night’s match against the division-leading Kitsap Pumas at Gordon Park Field in Bremerton. The club said he is expected to play against the Portland Timbers U-23s at 2 p.m. Sunday at Tumwater Stadium.

Morris is considered one of the top prospects in the country. He scored 27 goals in 28 matches with Sounders Academy and just finished his freshman season at Stanford, where he had six goals and seven assists for the Cardinal and was named to the all-Pac-12 Conference first team.

“Jordan Morris is an exciting young player, and he seems to excel at every level he gets the opportunity to play at,” U-23 coach Darren Sawatzky said in a news release. “ … Competitive games in the Northwest Division of the PDL has helped many players in their journey to become professional players, and it will be the same with Jordan.”

Also this weekend, Pierce County-based South Sound FC of the Evergreen Premier League will shift its home pitch from Lakewood to Tacoma, facing WestSound FC at 1 p.m. Saturday at Lincoln High School.
