This sordid romance between state Senate Republicans and the current 35th District senator continues at their peril. If Tim Sheldon’s leadership is truly a reflection of a party once interested in economic progress and enlightened citizenry, then the current Republican majority can best be identified by the words of Winston Churchill as a “riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma.”
What happened to the solid Republican caucus we once knew: honest, sincere, committed people? We enjoyed mutual respect despite our different agenda. We worked and prayed together on issues of public interest. Perhaps today’s career politicians serve only their own interests.
Fortunately, we have a 35th District Democratic candidate who places regional and state interests above a quest for legislative power or feeding an ego. A well-known and respected candidate, Irene Bowling, will make a great senator: an educator, a businesswoman, mother of three and a mentor for many. Irene has the respect of people on both sides of the political spectrum. She is dedicated to the welfare of the local community and is a paragon of honesty, reputability and integrity. Hopefully our Republican friends will soon become concerned about their future voice in state government.
