There was a time in this country when patriotism was celebrated during such holidays as Independence Day, Flag Day, Memorial Day, and Veterans Day. Today, these holidays seem to have devolved into mere opportunities for businesses to have sales and for workers to have another day off.
Independence Day is rarely mentioned. Instead of celebrating the brave men and women who fought for independence from England over a 100 years ago, we now seem to be celebrating the invention of gun powder, with neighbors competing with each other to prove who can afford the loudest and most expensive fireworks, regardless of bans on them.
Rather than being known as Independence Day, the day has become simply the 4th of July. I can’t help wondering why that is. Has our country’s history become irrelevant? Is it because history has been so poorly presented in schools that it’s boring? Or are we so into self that we don’t care about anything or anybody else?
Perhaps it’s time for some introspection.
