Tacoma man, 18, drowns in Alder Lake

Searchers recovered the body of an 18-year-old Tacoma man Sunday who drowned Friday in Alder Lake, Pierce County Sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said.

The boy was Rashawn Hale-Moody of Tacoma, the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office said.

He was trying to cross the Eatonville-area lake from the Thurston County side by holding onto a log with friends, when he slipped under, Troyer said.

He was not wearing a life vest, Troyer said.

Both Pierce and Thurston County Sheriff’s crews searched for him through the weekend, and they found his body Sunday evening.

The lake has zero visibility, making searches there difficult, Troyer said.

“It’s a cold water lake,” he said, encouraging visitors to wear flotation devices. “A hostile, unforgiving lake.”

Hale-Moody had just graduated from GATES High School, Troyer said.
