Pro indoor soccer team prepares for season in Kent

— Seattle Impact FC is settling into its new home at ShoWare Center, where the team will begin its inaugural Major Arena Soccer League season in November.

The indoor pitch was in place on the arena floor Tuesday while club officials held an introductory press conference.

“It’s important to get kids an opportunity to experience what I did as a kid at many Tacoma Stars soccer games,” said owner Dion Earl, a former Seattle Sounder and SeaDog. “… We at Seattle Impact FC are looking forward to adding to the landscape of the Seattle sports market, and I can’t wait.”

General manager Jose Moreno said “Seattle” was chosen for the name as a nod to the entire metro area. Earl said “Impact” was selected by his wife. The team colors are silver, blue and green.

The MASL schedule will be released in September, but the Impact expects to play a 20-game season from November to February.

The team will hold tryouts July 19-20. The coach is Jason Dunn, a former Seattle Pacific standout who in 1994 became the first player to sign with the expansion Seattle Sounders of the American Professional Soccer League, and the assistant coach is Todd Haley.

Meanwhile, John Crouch — owner of the outdoor South Sound FC — has announced the creation of a regional semipro league to be called the Western Indoor Soccer League.

One founding member will be the Tacoma Stars, who will play at the Tacoma Soccer Center under owner Lane Smith, who also owns the Pierce County-based Sounders U-23 outdoor team.
