Addiction treatment options should increase

July 17, 2014

Thank you for your piece on the lack of heroin addiction treatment in Thurston County. Hopefully, you have increased awareness on this issue. Heroin addiction affects entire families and without sufficient treatment facilities to treat it, a large segment of our population is experiencing the unfortunate consequences.

Thank you also for commenting that addiction is often associated with underlying mental health issues. When will our health care system (and funding to support it) be equipped to address the increasing need for dual diagnosis addiction treatment in our area? Where are the mental health providers equipped to do this?

The Olympian has published pieces in the past about the growing heroin use epidemic here. Unfortunately, the number of those addicted in our area will likely increase, while the treatment needed is either nonexistent or declining. What can be done to help those affected?
