Shoplifting suspect assaults security guard at Bayview Thriftway, police say

Staff writerJuly 18, 2014

A man accused of assaulting a security guard while shoplifting in downtown Olympia now faces a charge of first-degree robbery.

The incident occurred about 1 p.m. Thursday at the Bayview Thriftway, 516 Fourth Avenue West. When a security guard confronted the 18-year-old man on suspicion of shoplifting, the suspect struck the guard, according to Olympia police.

Officers arrived at the scene and arrested the suspect, who had $26 worth of merchandise on him, said police spokeswoman Laura Wohl. The shoplifting case was classified as a robbery because the suspect assaulted a security officer during the process, Wohl said.

The suspect is being held without bail, and his preliminary court appearance is scheduled for today (July 18).
