North Thurston (6-3) at Seattle Prep (7-2), 5 p.m., Seattle Memorial Stadium
Although the Rams have lost two of their last three games, they’re looking to advance to the first round of state for the first time since 2004, when they lost to Lynden, 28-21. Behind 1,000-yard rusher Lawyer Tillman and quarterback Jake Klumker, North Thurston put together a six-game winning streak and averaged nearly 28 points a game. Seattle Prep is in its first state preliminary game this decade and is looking to make state for the first time since 1991. The Panthers feature do-everything player Nick Holt Jr., son of University of Washington defensive coordinator Nick Holt. At 6-foot and 195 pounds, Holt Jr. had a TD run, a TD pass and two defensive scores, including an 80-yard interception return for Prep’s final points in a 41-27 win last week over Eastside Catholic.
Woodland (7-2) at Black Hills (7-2), 7 p.m., Tumwater District Stadium
Many observers projected Woodland to win the 2A Greater St. Helens League before the season began. Both of the Beavers’ losses came against teams that finished above them in the GSHL standings (Mark Morris and R.A. Long). They’re riding a three-game winning streak, and are coming off a 41-14 win over Ridgefield. QB Trevor Hurn has thrown for 2,507 yards and 26 TDs this season. Although Black Hills was shut out against Chehalis, 14-0, last week, the Wolves’ seven league wins came by an average 35-12 score. Cody Peterson has rushed for 1,662 yards and scored 20 TDs. A win over the Beavers means the Wolves earn a first-round state game for the second straight year.
Tumwater (6-3) at R.A. Long (7-2), 7 p.m., Longview Memorial Stadium
For the first time since 2005, Tumwater is on the road for a district crossover game. For R.A. Long, this is the second straight crossover game and fourth playoff appearance since 1980. At 7-2, the Lumberjacks’ lone league loss came last week – 21-7 against Mark Morris. Prior to being held to seven points by the Monarchs, R.A. Long was averaging nearly 30 points a game. The Lumberjacks have allowed an average of 17 points a game, including two shutouts. Tumwater is coming off a 21-14 win, in which it racked up 348 yards of offense. Pat Peden had a breakout game, rushing for 133 yards and scoring the goahead TD. The T-Birds were tied for second in scoring in the EvCo, averaging 28.6 points a game.
Kennedy (6-3) at Timberline (9-0), 7:30 p.m., South Sound Stadium
It had been a few years since Timberline won a league title, but the Blazers won outright last Friday with a 35-17 win over North Thurston. Jordan Radcliffe and Kevin Russell combined for 258 yards on the ground against the Rams. The Blazers, who average 44.2 points a game, haven’t been undefeated at this stage since 2004, before losing to Bellevue in the quarterfinals. The Lancers of Kennedy finished third in the Seamount League, but led the league in scoring with 32 points a game. They come into tonight’s game having lost two of their prior three games, but come in on a high note after a 49-18 win over Mount Rainier. Antonio Valencia leads the team in rushing and had three touchdowns last week.
Hockinson (2-7) at Chehalis (9-0), 7 p.m., Bearcat Stadium
The Hawks of Hockinson started off the season with four straight losses, but got their league wins against Ridgefield (35-12) and Washougal (9-3, OT). They are led by a trio of running backs – Aaron Hanson, P.J. Owenby, and Hayden Kytola. Chehalis steamrolled through a perfect 9-0 regular season and capped off its first EvCo title with a 14-0 win over Black Hills. The Bearcats have put up a league-best 266 points and have given up only 85 (also a league-best). Their closest margin of victory was a 27-19 win over Class 4A Heritage.
Rogers (6-3) at Olympia (8-1), 7:30 p.m., Ingersoll Stadium
After a Week 4 loss to South Kitsap at home, Olympia won five straight games to lock up the Narrows League’s second seed. The Bears were second in the Narrows in scoring and averaged 31 points in their final five games. But their defense has been just as impressive, holding two of their final three foes to only seven points each. The Rams of Puyallup had already locked up the SPSL’s No. 3 seed prior to a 27-20 loss to Puyallup last week. Dalton Gervais threw for 252 yards in the loss, but also threw two interceptions. Receiver Kellen Westering had seven catches for 114 yards. A win means the Bears will be on the road for next weekend’s first round of the 4A state playoffs.
