Worker privacy/gag rule bills dead

• Published March 11, 2009

One wondered what would kill the worker privacy bills (or gag rules, depending on who's talking) that unions had wanted so much this session. Now we have a joint statement from the top trio, the governor, Senate majority leader and Speaker of the House, saying:

We are no longer considering action on House Bill 1528 and Senate Bill 5446, also known as the Worker Privacy Act.

Immediately upon becoming aware of an email linking potential action on the bill to campaign contributions, bringing the bill forward was no longer an option.

The email raises serious legal and ethical questions.

The matter has been referred to the Washington State Patrol for investigation.

So ... yeah. I have no idea what they're talking about. What else is new, right? But seriously, attempt at clarification with Gov. Chris Gregoire's office got me no where. The general idea is that somebody, not sure who, said they would, or would not, donate money to legislators based on how they voted on the act. So what's to do but shelve the bill?

My reporter senses are tingling here, because it's awfully convienient. This was a major contention point between two powerful interests, unions and business, and now it goes away through no fault of the decision makers.
