Paper can't pass judgment in news coverage

• Published June 27, 2006

06/27/2006 – What an incredible lack of responsibility you have shown in putting on the front page (6/26/06) a photo of a father and his son as they "take a dip in the cool Deschutes River." First of all why is a child of this age even close to a river? And why doesn't the child have a life jacket on? There were several drownings in the Northwest this past weekend and this easily have added to that list.

Please use more discretion and responsibility in approving articles and photos, especially for the front page, of your newspaper. -- Carol

Executive Editor Vickie Kilgore:
The Olympian's role is to reflect the community and record what we see, regardless of what we as individuals may condone. It's important for readers to know how others in our community live, work and play, whether the activity is something as simple as a dip in the river or -- as is expected to take place this weekend -- as controversial as a neo-Nazi rally.
