Justice Barbara Madsen won election today as chief justice of the state Supreme Court, succeeding veteran Chief Justice Gerry Alexander next year.

Alexander, who hits the mandatory retirement age of 75 in 2011, announced his decision in September and has served a record nine years. He told the other eight court members earlier that month he would step down in January and serve out his term as an associate justice.

Madsen will be sworn in on Jan. 11.

Madsen has served 16 years on the court and has chaired its Washington State Gender and Justice Commission, according to this news release, which also said:

Madsen is the third woman to be elected to a seat on the bench of the Washington State Supreme Court since the formation of the Court in 1889. Justice Madsen was first elected in 1992, re-elected in 1998, and re-elected for a third term in 2004.

Madsen is one of three justices up for re-election next year.
