Earthquake strikes off Oregon coast

A 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck at 11:52 a.m. today off the west coast of Oregon, about 150 miles due west of Bandon.

Jon Connolly, the seismology lab coordinator at the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network at the University of Washington in Seattle, says Monday morning’s quake was not strong enough to trigger any sort of tsunami warning.

Connolly says the quake was about 6.2 miles below the water’s surface, and occurred on a fracture zone, between the Pacific plate and the Juan de Fuca plate.
