A public memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday for a Rochester resident killed in Iraq.
Cpl. Christopher J. Nelson, 22, was one of three Fort Lewis soldiers killed Nov. 18 when a suicide bomber detonated explosives. The Associated Press reported the blast occurred as the soldiers were handing out gifts to Iraqi children in a playground near Baquba, capital of the Diyala province, northeast of Baghdad.
All three soldiers were infantryman assigned to 1st Battalion, 38th Infantry Regiment of the 4th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division.
The service will be held at Rochester High School, where Nelson graduated in 2003. The school is located at 19800 Carper Road S.W.
Fort Lewis will hold a memorial service for the three soldiers at 11 a.m. Dec. 5.
