U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings, Washington Governor Chris Gregoire and Superintendent Terry Bergeson today took part in an education policy roundtable with state legislators, educators and business leaders at Roosevelt Elementary School.
During her visit, Spellings also announced a $1.9 million School Improvement Grant for Washington to help with schools that are not meeting Adequate Yearly Progress.
The grant will help Washington take a greater role in developing and delivering comprehensive leadership and technical assistance to help reform under-performing schools and districts.
In her opening remarks, Spellings commended Gregoire for Washington's successes under No Child Left Behind and understanding the importance of math and science learning if Washington wants to continue to lead in industries such as aeronautics, high-tech and bio-tech in today's globally competitive world.
