4 local cities, PSE honored for being tree friendly

OLYMPIA - Four local cities were among 71 to earn Arbor Day awards today from the state.

Olympia, Lacey, Tumwater and Yelm were on the list.

State Commissioner of Public Lands Doug Sutherland announced the awards for creating healthier urban forests.

Puget Sound Energy was among eight public utility districts honored for work in promoting tree-friendly practices.

Lacey Mayor Graeme Sackrison said: “As a young boy, I explored the woods and creeks all around my area. As we become more urbanized, we are losing that heritage. The primary importance of trees is that it’s a way to preserve some of our history and make the urbanization less stark. We are very proud to be a Tree City USA!”

To win the honor, cities must have:

--A “tree board” to assure continuity in a work plan to care for community trees.

-- A law designating the tree board as responsible for carrying out an annual forestry plan.

-- A forestry program with an annual budget of at least $2 per capita.

-- An Arbor Day observance to celebrate the planting and appreciation of trees.
