Cabela's wild turkey calling clinic, contest set for March 21

• Published March 12, 2009

Cabela's -- that little outdoor store up in Lacey -- will fill up with wild turkey callers on March 21.

We're not talking about whiskey drinkers here. Wild turkeys are widespread throughout the Northwest, and more hunters stalk -- and call for them -- each year.

It's kind of cool to watch humans make sounds like a big tom turkey looking for a mate -- or a fight with another tom. We humans have also mastered the seductive clucks of hen turkeys.

In fact, there are now turkey calling contests all over the place, and the Narrows Strut Busters Chapter of the Wild Turkey Federation will put on a turkey calling clinic and contest that starts at 9 a.m. at Cabela's.
