Are handshakes still acceptable at this germy time in history?

A friend of mine who is a teacher in Southern California said at the high school where he teachers, bumping elbows has become the new greeting.

Etiquette consultant Arden Clise explored the issue on her blog. It's mostly common sense, but it's funny that this issue has come up often enough for an etiquette adviser to talk about it.

I've found that most people are perfectly understanding of a simple apology whenever I can't shake hands in certain situations. I've also taken to carrying hand sanitizer in my purse.
