There will be a story in Friday's paper describing how the district will make up for missed days at Capital High School, caused by the snowfall this week. This blog item is the sketch version.
The school has been operating under a conditional use permit issued by the city, after the roof over the school's library caved in on Christmas day following December's heavy snowfall. The city will not allow classes to be held in the school when there is any accumulation of snow on the roof. Capital has been closed since Tuesday, though other schools in the Olympia district have not been affected.
To address the missed days, district officials decided: n Capital students will make up one missed day on March 6, which had been a scheduled teacher training and planning day for the district. n The district will request a waiver for four of the five days missed after winter break, and the two whole days missed this week. n Mid-day cancellations caused by snowfall (there have been two) have counted as school days. n All the schools in the district will make up the three school days that were canceled in December because of the heavy snow. The Olympia district’s last day of school is scheduled for June 18.
Here's another tidbit I couldn't fit into Friday's paper: Capital teachers at the school are also planning to offer extra-curricular optional classes to be offered after or before school or on the weekends, district spokesman Peter Rex said Thursday. This will fulfill the number of days required in the teachers’ contract, but will not count toward a student's grade or credit.
“These will not be graded classes,” Rex said. “Students would be encouraged to take these, according to their needs and interests.”
School throughout the Olympia district is scheduled to resume Tuesday after midwinter break.
