High school math WASL requirement changes

• Published March 30, 2009

High school seniors who have not passed the math portion of the Washington Assessment of Student Learning won’t have to worry about taking the test again, because of a bill signed today by Gov. Chris Gregoire. House Bill 1562 allows students in the classes of 2008 to 2012 who don’t pass the math portion of the tenth grade WASL to graduate if they take two credits of high school math after tenth grade — about two academic years.

The first class that will be required to pass a standardized high school math assessment will be the class of 2013, who will take standardized assessments as part of their Algebra and Geometry classes or Integrated Math I and Integrated Math II classes.

The bill passed unanimously in the House earlier this month. The Senate passed the bill 42 to 1 on March 20, with six excused. Sen. Jim Kastama, D-Puyallup, voted against it.
