Tumwater superintendent Terry Borden, who has been with the district for 23 years, has announced his plans to retire in June.
Borden, 64, has headed Tumwater schools for six years. He was the assistant superintendent of the district when superintendent Nick Brossoit left Tumwater for a post in Edmonds in 2004. Borden was named acting superintendent upon Brossoit's resignation, and then was permanently hired for the post in 2005, beating out a field of applicants for the district's top job.
Borden has been an educator for 42 years. He started his career in eastern Washington at Moxee and Union Gap, and also was a principal at St. Michael School in Olympia and in the Tenino School District.
Borden joined Tumwater in 1986 when he was hired to serve as principal at Littlerock Elementary. In 1989, he was appointed Director of Staff Development and Outcome-based Education. He held that position until 1991 when he was appointed Director of Personnel and Human Resources. Borden advanced to Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources and Elementary Education in 2002. He was appointed Interim Superintendent in the summer of 2004 and selected Superintendent in 2004- 2005 school year. For more information about this story, read Friday's edition of The Olympian.
