The Olympian
About 800 commuters have signed up to participate in the 21st annual Bicycle Commuter Contest. It’s a great way to highlight the benefits of alternative modes of transportation.
Participants will compete for prizes, but more importantly, they get a good dose of exercise, save money, reduce traffic congestion and put a dent in greenhouse gas emissions.
The monthlong Bicycle Commuter Contest is sponsored by Intercity Transit. More than 1,000 participants last year logged about 87,000 miles on their bicycles, saving about $14,000 in fuel costs and reducing greenhouse-gas emissions by about 80,000 pounds, organizers say.
It’s a great program, and it’s not too late to sign up at www.intercitytransit.com/page.cfm.
