The North Thurston School District’s work on reducing the amount of pesticide at its schools has earned it Star certification from the IPM Institute, which focuses on nonchemical eradication of pests.
Among the strategies used by the North Thurston’s maintenance staff, led by facilities department director Tom Nelson, are keeping classrooms free from food debris, regularly cleaning kitchen sinks, installing door sweeps and maintaining facilities, according to a news release from the Integrated Pest Management Institute.
