Residents can learn to care for streams

The Thurston Conservation District will lead a free workshop from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 26 for county residents who own or lease land with stream access.

At the workshop, streamside residents will learn ways to promote healthy habitat, attract wildlife and prevent soil erosion.

Volunteer for role with Salmon Stewards

Stream Team seeks volunteers for its Salmon Stewards program to provide information about migrating salmon at public viewing areas this fall.

A classroom training session is set for Wednesday, followed by a two Saturday morning training field trips.

Salmon Steward docents greet the public during the fall chinook salmon migration at the Fifth Avenue bridge in downtown Olympia and Tumwater Falls.

Later in the fall, they greet hikers along McLane Creek Nature Trail during wild chum salmon spawning activities.

Learn about certified wood products

Northwest Certified Forestry will lead a workshop for businesses interested in marketing Forest Stewardship Council certified wood products from 1 to 5 p.m. Sept. 17 at Brighton Park Grange in Tumwater.

The cost of the event is $25. Registration is required, and space is limited.

Northwest Certified Forestry and the Nisqually River Council also are looking for small-scale sawmills and wood manufacturers interested in processing wood products grown in the Nisqually River watershed.

Free showerheads, aerators available

Customers of Mason County Public Utility District No. 3 with electric hot water heaters are eligible to receive free showerheads and faucet aerators to reduce their use of hot water and, in turn, reduce electricity consumption.

Conservation district meeting is Aug. 26

The Thurston Conservation District will conduct its monthly board meeting at 3 p.m. Aug. 26 at the district office, 2918 Ferguson St. S.W., Building 1, Suite A, Tumwater.
