KAHUKU, Hawaii – Michelle Wie put herself into contention for her first LPGA Tour victory, shooting a 2-under 70 in difficult conditions Friday in the second round of the season-opening SBS Open.
Making her debut as an LPGA card-carrying member, Wie used a three-birdie run to surge to the top of the leaderboard with an 8-under 136. She also closed the first round with three consecutive birdies.
First-round leader Angela Stanford shot a 71 to match Wie at 8-under. Angela Park (68) was at 7-under, two shots ahead of Japan's Momoko Ueda (71).
The 19-year-old Wie is seeking her first title in her 49th start on the LPGA Tour.
