In a hot-and-cold season, North Thurston's volleyball team turned red hot to upset favored Olympic in four games in Bremerton to advance to the 3A district playoffs.

In a loser-out match, North Thurston came up big, 25-10, 23-25, 25-14 and 25-18.

“We rattled them a little bit,” North Thurston coach Micah McBride said. “We served them deep and then served them short to keep them off-balance.”

North Thurston (7-8) opens the district tournament Friday at Auburn Mountainview.

Olympic (10-5), which finished second in its league, was eliminated.

“We were the underdogs, no doubt,” McBride said. “It was fun to see our team play as a team. We’ve been up and down this season.”

North Thurston was led by Taylor Stoeckle’s 11 kills, Kelly Joiner’s 10 kills, and Breanna Bain’s 28 assists. Freshman Briana Tresler, just up from the junior varsity, added six digs.

Tumwater 5, Mark Morris 4 (SO): After being down 2-0 at halftime, the Thunderbirds scored four second-half goals, forced overtime, and won in a shootout against a quick Mark Morris team on Tuesday in a winner-to-state, loser-out game at Tumwater District Stadium.

“It was an unbelievable finish for our girls,” Tumwater coach Stephanie O’Neill said.

The T-Birds scored twice in the final 10 minutes, including freshman Emily Barclift’s goal that tied the game in the final second of regulation.

Maddie White scored three of Mark Morris’ four goals.

After two scoreless OTs, Tumwater won the shootout, 4-2.

The T-Birds will travel to Hockinson to play for state seeding. Hockinson defeated Centralia, 2-0, on Tuesday. The state tournament begins Nov. 11.
