I'm a 50 year-old mother of two, grandmother of three, and I am a newlywed. You can plot your course in life any time you like, but not everyone in your life is using your compass. Email me at: tmcgee@theolympian.com.
When this time of year comes along, I work on our annual Light of Hope. Along with the Light of Hope, we try to find ways to help connect the community with opportunities – opportunities to help others, and opportunities to get help if needed.
Finding ways to help others sometimes takes effort. Other times it knocks on your door, and all you have to do is answer. Look for The Olympian’s Light of Hope in your Sunday paper, on Nov. 29.
The following story came across my desk recently, and along with the obvious relief I felt that a woman in this position got help, was the impression the police officers involved made. And not just the police officers, I guess, but there just seemed to be a chain of hearts that linked together right up until the very moment this woman laid her three children down to sleep, and then closed her own eyes for the night.
I copied and pasted this story from an email I received, and with permission I share it with you. I’m removing the name of the ‘misguided’ creepy guy, more to allow his wife to retain her privacy than anything else. I had thought about taking all names out, and even though the people involved didn’t do this for recognition, it’s nice to know that there are still people out there with compassionate hearts.
If an opportunity to make a difference in someone’s life knocked on your door, what would you do?
On October 26, 2009 at about 9:30pm, a citizen called 911 to report that a female jumped out of a vehicle in the area of Martinson Road and 148th Avenue asking her to call 911. The female told the citizen that her husband was drunk and she was trying to get her children out of the vehicle. Deputies Slease, C. Clark, and Gallagher responded to the area and Deputy Slease located the male driver walking on 148th Avenue. The male indicated that he had been arguing with a female, appeared intoxicated and was detained.
The vehicle was located as well as the male's wife and their three sons, ages 2 months, 2 years and 4 years old. Further investigation revealed that the male was driving while intoxicated and had endangered his wife and three young children in the process. The female had removed the keys from the ignition and had thrown them off the side of the roadway to protect herself and the children. After investigation, the male (name removed) was placed under arrest for DUI as well as four counts of reckless endangerment DV and booked into the county jail.
