Letters to the editor -- July 11

Oh, we can have laws to prevent the insane from owning guns (though even the insane have gun rights, don’t they?), but after the fact, after they’ve killed 20 or 30 people, after the street is red with blood. The NRA will, of course, insist that if everyone is armed, we’re all safe. You betcha, baby! In John Wayne’s heroic cowboy culture, maybe, but not in real life.

Anyone who now votes for a conservative should be confined to the Home for the Terminally Stupid.

Let Tri Vo buy the Capitol Center building

Another possible scenario for developing the isthmus would be to permit Tri Vo to build. He is willing and has the capital. The units will, hopefully attract a variety of occupants, so prices should be $400,000 and up, (not just higher end).

Then have Tri Vo buy the remaining land, take down the Capitol Center Building and help build a park for the city he loves.

The taxes on each of the units would not be waived but could be put in a fund to develop the park and provide for its maintenance.

Trapped by Tumwater’s Fourth of July parade

On the morning of July 4, I was at a friend’s apartment off of Capitol Boulevard on West T Street.

Around noon, I was getting ready to leave and began heading toward Capitol Boulevard when I came to a Fourth of July parade. I personally have no problem with parades and other celebrations, yet when I came to the road, there was no way for me to get out.

I tried using different streets and exits yet no matter what I was trapped. If I had an emergency I would not have had a way to get out of the apartment complex. In an emergency it would have taken a long time to clear out the streets and blocked roads to get out. There needs to be a way to get out of this area, even if there is a parade going on.

I even asked a police officer what I was supposed to do to get out and he told me to take a back road, he was unable to point me in the direction of the road when I went to find it. There was no road that I was able to find. It would be nice to have some detours or something for people so that they are not trapped in their homes, especially in the event of an emergency.
