Rockers Shinedown are on a huge rock bill that will also bring Nickelback, Breaking Benjamin and Sick Puppies to the Tacoma Dome tonight. And last week, front man Brent Smith checked in from a tour stop in Kansas City.
On opening for Nickelback: “When we’re headlining we’re playing to between three and 5,000 people a night. But on this, we’re playing for anywhere upwards to 10 to 15,000 people a night. For Nickelback to ask us to come out do this show with them (is) a big honor for us. And all of ’em are really great guys.”
On what kind of set to expect: “You’re gonna see a knock-down, drag-out 40 minutes when we get onstage. Let’s put it that way.
“You’re gonna hear songs like ‘Sound of Madness.’ You’re gonna hear songs like, possibly, ‘Devour.’ We don’t know right now. We like switching things up. From the first record songs like ‘45.’ You’re gonna hear ‘The Crow and the Butterfly.’ … You’ll probably hear something like ‘Cyanide Sweet Tooth Suicide’ off ‘Madness,’ too. We’ve been playing that ‘cause the crowd’s seemed to be losing it for that song.
Never miss a local story.
On former front man Jasin Todd’s departure: “I would love to be able to give you a story that wasn’t a cliché. But unfortunately, in rock music or any kind of music … substances can sometimes overtake you after a while. By no means am I gonna throw anyone under the bus. But he had some personal things that were going on and he needed to take care of ’em.
If I would have brought him out on the road, he probably would have died out here. That’s the last thing I would ever want on my head.
On who came up with “Diamond Eyes” first: “That being the title of the new Deftones album and a song Shinedown recorded for the forthcoming action flick, “The Expendables.”
“It’s kind of funny because we wrote that song 10 months ago and it was named 10 months ago. When I saw (the Deftones album) I was just like, ‘Wow, that’s really strange.’ ‘Diamond Eyes’ is not something that you would just necessarily come up with, you know what I mean. It was pretty interesting to see that, especially because I’m a huge fan of the Deftones.”
On the next Shinedown album: The band plans to go back into the studio in January.
“Music’s been written but no lyrics just yet. I have to be off the road before I can start writing lyrics. I have to get in the studio before it’s time for me to do that.”
“It’ll always change direction, man. Like, ‘Leave a Whisper’ doesn’t sound anything like ‘Us and Them.’ And ‘Us and Them’ doesn’t sound anything like ‘Sound of Madness.’ And ‘Sound of Madness’ doesn’t sound anything like those other two records. The fourth record won’t sound anything like the other three. It’ll definitely have a different direction.”
