South Puget Sound Community College’s annual Spring Plant Sale, which turns 35 this year, is slated for May 8-9 in the campus’ new greenhouse and potting shed.
Herbs, trees, annuals, perennials, native plants, vegetables, hanging baskets and more will be available from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 8 and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 9.
It will be the first sale in the new greenhouse, which features retractable roof panels and side vents to aid air circulation. The new design is expected to lower maintenance costs by reducing fan operation hours, and produce stouter plants more resistant to pests.
The greenhouse features triple wall polycarbonate heat retention blanket that will save as much as 50 percent of heating costs. A shade curtain will reduce overheating in the summer.
Never miss a local story.
The greenhouse will exclusively use organic fertilizers and pest control methods as well as a compost tea brewer. It will reuse water captured from its roof. The internal climate will be managed by computerized environmental controls, including a weather station.
