Forest scientist Nadkarni to talk about research

Nalini Nadkarni, internationally renowned forest canopy scientist and professor at The Evergreen State College, will describe her explorations of forests on four continents at a free public presentation at the Lacey Timberland Regional Library at 1 p.m. Nov. 14.

Nadkarni will speak about one of her areas of special interest: the multiple ways that trees fulfill human needs. She draws on her work with scientists, artists, dancers, poets, loggers and prisoners. In 2002, she received a Guggenheim Fellowship to support the public dissemination of her work.

One of Nadkarni’s projects is the Evergreen Canopy Walkway, described on her Web page: “The Evergreen State College is exploring the feasibility of building a forest canopy walkway on its campus. Envisioned as a universally accessible system of canopy-level walkways linking existing campus structures with an arboreal seminar pod, The Evergreen Canopy Walkway will provide unique opportunities to view and understand the forest from root system to tree top.”

Nadkarni teaches in the environmental studies program at Evergreen. Her most recent book is “Between Earth and Sky: Our Intimate Connections to Trees.” For more details, go to her Web page at academic.evergreen.edu/n/nadkarnn.

Her presentation is sponsored by the Friends of the Lacey Timberland Library. The library is at 500 College St. S.E., Lacey. For more details, call 360-491-3860 or go to www.TRL.org.
