OLYMPIA - Jesse Stevick pulled away early to win his fourth straight Capital City Marathon on Sunday morning, running much of the race alone.

Stevick, 27 and a science teacher at Olympia High School, won in 2 hours, 40 minutes and nine seconds. He struggled for the final nine miles of the marathon and even considered dropping out.

“I went out too fast for the level of condition I’m in,” Stevick said. “I was in survival mode at mile 17. People cheering really helped.”

Annie Thiessen of Tacoma was the first women’s finisher and sixth overall, finishing in 2:58:21. She won the race last year.

“I feel great,” Thiessen said after the race. “This is such a great race. The people do a fantastic job.”

Michael Bailey of Seattle won the men’s half marathon, finishing in 1:13:17. Mariel Ettinger of Bend, Ore., was the first women’s finisher. The former Stanford University runner finished in 1:18:55.

About 1,700 runners competed in three races Sunday, a warm, sunny day.
