Fourth of July weekend events

Today

Tumwater's 4th of July Parade, Artesian Family Festival and Thunder Valley Fireworks Show: Fourth of July Parade at 11 a.m.; gates open for the festival at 6 p.m.; fireworks start at 10:15 p.m. at the Tumwater Valley Golf Course, Tumwater. $5 for parking. Call 360-754-4160.

Fourth of July Barbecue and Fireworks: Barbecue starts at 11 a.m., music starts at 12:30 p.m. and fireworks begin at 10:15 p.m., Red Wind Casino, 12819 Yelm Highway S.E., Olympia. Call 360-412-5000 or go to www.redwindcasino.com.

Summerfest Celebration: A variety of events between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. at Borst Park in Centralia and a parade starts at 4 p.m. in downtown Centralia. Live music starts at 5 p.m., a Destruction Derby begins at 7 p.m. and fireworks are at 10:30 p.m. at the Southwest Washington Fairgrounds in Chehalis. $8 adults, $6 youths and seniors for the derby. Saturday

11 a.m.: "Celebrating Our Constitution" Independence Day celebration in Oakville, featuring a re-enactment of Oakville's last horseback bank robbers. Call 360-273-2702.

11 a.m. to 1 p.m.: Operation Support Our Troops' Freedom Bridge Rally on the Interstate 5 overpass at Exit 122. Participants are asked to bring flags and signs of support.

Ongoing

Crabbing: Boston Harbor is good for red rock crabs and Hood Canal is good for Dungeness crabs. South Puget Sound is open every day for crabbing through Jan. 2.

Swimming: Deep Lake at Millersylvania State Park has two sandy beaches. Kenneydell County Park, on Black Lake, has a swimming float. Lake Sylvia State Park, on a forested hillside in Montesano, also has a swimming area.

Outdoors: For mountain biking and hiking, go to the Waddell Creek section and the Margaret McKenny campground at Capitol State Forest. They are on Waddell Creek Road near Littlerock. Staircase in Olympic National Park also is open. It has hiking trails, a section of the Skokomish River, a campground and picnic areas.

Out of town

Tall Ships Tacoma 2008: 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today through Sunday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday along Foss Waterway in Tacoma. About 30 tall ships, music, food and activities will be included. Call 877-297-6801 or go to www.tallshipstacoma.com.

Road work

Online: People can get information about traffic jams over the Fourth of July weekend from the state Department of Transportation at www.wsdot.wa.gov/congestion/independenceday. The Web site compares travel times on the busiest highways and suggests the best times to drive. The highways with peak travel are Interstate 90 and U.S. Highway 2 over the mountains, Interstate 5 into Canada and I-5 south of Olympia.

Mason County: Shelton's installation of a sewer system will intermittently close lanes in both directions of state Route 102 near the Corrections Center from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. today.

Elsewhere: No other state DOT road projects are planned for today, according to the agency's Web site.
