A 55-year-old man was killed Tuesday night when he was run over by a runaway backhoe as he cleared property east of Renton, the King County Sheriff's Office reported.
Sheriff's deputies were called about 5:30 p.m. to the 11900 block of 171st Place Southeast.
Investigators believe the Seattle man was clearing property when a tie rod broke and damaged the backhoe, deputies reported. The man got the machine onto 171st Place Southeast but "the tie rod ended up stuck in the ground like a kickstand," deputies reported.
"The man kicked the tie rod loose and the backhoe started rolling downhill," a press release stated.
