A 32-year-old Whatcom County man accused of stabbing his father more than 30 times inside their home has been charged with second-degree murder.
Per Olaf Johansson was also charged Wednesday in Superior Court with two counts of second-degree assault, accused of stabbing his 64-year-old mother, Loretta, and his 13-year-old niece in the same Tuesday attack near Bellingham. Loretta Johansson was hospitalized after she was stabbed in the abdomen and hip. The niece suffered minor injuries.
Whatcom County Chief Criminal Deputy Prosecutor Mac Setter says Per Johansson is believed to suffer from schizophrenia and had been taking medication for that condition but stopped the medication recently.
Setter says 69-year-old Raymond Johansson was fatally injured protecting his wife and granddaughter.
