BAINBRIDGE ISLAND - Police are investigating a body that washed ashore Wednesday morning in the Manitou Beach area of Bainbridge Island.
The body has not been identified and investigators are still on scene, according to Bainbridge Island Police Commander Sue Shultz.
The body appears to be male, but it is highly decomposed, said Bainbridge Police Detective Trevor Ziemba, who guessed that it may have been in the water for two or three weeks.
A passerby spotted it at about 8 a.m. It was on the beach on Manitou Beach Drive Northeast, near its intersection with Northeast Beach Crest Drive, Ziemba said.
Never miss a local story.
Bainbridge police officers are working with the Seattle Police Department, which is leading the investigation. The body could be related to a missing person from Seattle. But Ziemba was not able to release any more information because it is a criminal investigation.
Investigators may have to rely on dental records to identify the body.
"There’s probably no connection to Bainbridge Island other than the tide probably brought him here," Ziemba said.
The Kitsap County Coroner’s Office has taken the body and will determine the identification, as well as cause and manner of death.
They road near the beach was closed for most of the morning but has since reopened.
