BELLINGHAM - A former Bellingham martial arts instructor was booked into Whatcom County Jail after allegedly trying to take video of a student undressing in a changing room.
Randy J. Fields, 24, was working as a martial arts instructor at Shayne Simpsons Pacific Northwest Karate Center, 1600 Kentucky St., when the incident happened Tuesday, Jan. 25.
A 27-year-old Bellingham woman, who was a student at the center, was allegedly told by Fields to go into a changing room, undress and weigh herself, Bellingham Police spokesman Mark Young said.
When she went into the room, she looked around and saw a cell phone with a red light on; its screen was activated and aimed at the scales, Young said.
Never miss a local story.
She left the room and saw Fields go into it and come back out. She then went home and told friends what happened, and they encouraged her to contact the business owner, Shayne Simpson, Young said.
Simpson immediately fired Fields, who had worked at the center for a year and a half, and called police.
"There was no hesitation or question of what I had to do," Simpson said. "I had to take immediate action to protect (my students)."
After being contacted by officers, Fields came into the police department voluntarily and allegedly admitted to the offense, Young said. He was booked into jail for investigation of voyeurism and later released on bail.
The case has been forwarded to the prosecutor's office.
It is not known if there are other victims. No one else has come forward, Young said.
