It could be mid-March before a Kalama, Wash., man accused of fatally shooting the Rainier, Ore., police chief is sent to a state hospital for a mental evaluation.
Circuit Court Judge Ted Grove signed an order Feb. 11 to transfer Daniel Butts from the Columbia County Jail to the Oregon State Hospital in Salem for an exam as soon as possible.
Columbia County Sheriff Jeff Dickerson tells the Longview Daily News that hospital officials have advised jail officials they don't have room for Butts yet.
Butts is charged with aggravated murder and related counts in the Jan. 5 death of Chief Ralph Painter.
His arraignment and trial are on hold pending the exam to evaluate whether he is stable enough to assist with his defense.
