Thurston County residents woke up today to nearly five inches of snow that fell overnight, and although temperatures will fall into the teens by early Friday morning, they are expected to rise to 31 to 35 degrees Friday afternoon, likely melting snow and ice, according to the National Weather Service. A winter weather advisory still is in effect until 6 p.m. today and there is a chance of snow showers tonight.
Never miss a local story.
Helping to melt the snow and ice on Friday, in addition to warmer temperatures, will be clearing weather and mostly sunny skies, meteorologist Carl Cerniglia said today. Temperatures will remain in the mid-30s Saturday, followed by a weak weather system that is expected to bring a chance of light snow that will change to rain late Saturday. Rain is in the forecast for Sunday, he said.
Meanwhile, road crews have been busy in Olympia, Lacey and Thurston County and their work will continue through the night. Road crews for Olympia and the county have cleared major roads and will start working on secondary and residential streets today and tonight. Because of limited equipment, Lacey road crews will continue to focus on main roads, intersections, curves and hills, public works operations manager Brad Burdick said.
In Olympia, the Lakeridge Drive hill near the Thurston County Courthouse reopened about 12:30 p.m. today and steep hills on Fourth Avenue, Raft Street and San Francisco Street are expected to open this afternoon, Olympia public works spokeswoman Bonnie Herrington said.
