KENNEWICK - A 19-year-old man was sentenced to 45 days in jail for attacking another man with nunchucks.
Steven Ross Proffitt of West Richland must report to jail by 8 a.m. Friday to begin serving the time.
He pleaded guilty Feb. 16 to third-degree assault, saying Timothy Cottrell suffered "bruises as a result of my striking him with these nunchucks."
The attack caught the attention of West Richland police Jan. 12 when they were called to Kadlec Regional Medical Center in Richland for reports of a man who had been assaulted.
Proffitt and a 17-year-old boy hid in bushes near Eagle Street and Paradise Way before they confronted Cottrell, 18, court documents said. The victim had injuries to his head and body.
A friend of Cottrell also was hurt when she tried to help him, documents said.
Proffitt had the nunchucks when arrested. He also reportedly had admitted the assault to a friend before he was picked up.
Proffitt was ordered to have no contact with Cottrell and to undergo an evaluation for anger management and to follow any recommended treatment.
A restitution hearing is set April 4 to determine how much he should pay for Cottrell's medical costs.
