A Vancouver, Wash., teen has been sentenced to 17 1/2 years in prison after pleading guilty to assault and robbery in a shooting that left another teen paralyzed.
Superior Court Judge John Nichols imposed the sentence Thursday on 17-year-old Damian R. Grover. The judge said he decided on a penalty near the high point of the sentencing range because of the seriousness of the injury and because drug activity was involved.
Grover shot an acquaintance last Oct. 19 during a drug deal at an apartment complex.
The Columbian says Grover apologized to the victim's family before he was sentenced, stopping to control his tears. He said drugs led him to a violent lifestyle.
