The snowboarder killed in an avalanche at Stevens Pass has been identified as a University of Washington student, 20-year-old Riley McCarthy of Seattle.
The King County medical examiner's office says he suffocated under the pressure of the snow.
The sheriff's office says he was snowboarding Sunday with three other UW students in an out-of-bounds area of the Stevens Pass ski area known as Cowboy Mountain. McCarthy went down the hill in a slightly different direction from his friends and was hit from behind by the avalanche. He was carried by the snow into a tree and injured.
The friends called for help and dug him out. He was not breathing and could not be revived by CPR.

University spokesman Bob Roseth says McCarthy was a sophomore in pre-engineering studies.
