A soldier who prompted a SWAT call-out after allegedly firing a gun while fighting with his wife was arrested early Monday after a tip led police to a home in the 7600 block of 35th Street West in University Place.
The 25-year-old man was taken into custody on suspicion of assault about 12:30 a.m., hours after authorities realized he had crawled out a back window of his apartment at 132nd Street and Meridian Avenue before the tactical team arrived, Pierce County sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said.
The soldier had returned Friday from a tour in Afghanistan and an argument escalated after he found another man in his wife’s car, Troyer said.
The soldier fired a round into the ground and his wife called 911 to report he was armed and inside the apartment with their 2-year-old daughter, Troyer said. The SWAT team surrounded the home and for hours tried to communicate with the soldier before forcing their way inside and realizing he was not there.
The man was “contrite” while speaking with deputies after his arrest, Troyer said.
