EVERETT, Wash. - Washington state troopers say a runaway emu named Curious George died of injuries he suffered after he wandered into late-night traffic on U.S. Highway 2 near Everett.
Trooper Mark Francis tells The Daily Herald the large flightless bird first came to the State Patrol's attention when a 911 caller reported hitting the creature Sunday night. The bird kept on trotting. Francis notes it could have been hit other times as well.
A State Patrol sergeant who tried to help contain the emu suffered a cut hand. The emu's unidentified owner also joined the rescue effort but police say it was too late. The bird died of his injuries after managing to leave the Hewitt Avenue Trestle.
Everett spokeswoman Kate Reardon says she was told the bird lived on a farm on Ebey Island, which is spanned by the trestle.
